Artwell was delighted to gather with more than 320 supporters and friends in an evening of joyful celebration highlighting honorees Spike Lee, Lynne Horoschak, and Jerron Corley.
Living up to its billing of transforming and inspiring through the power of the arts, the ArtWell Awards also featured original poetry readings throughout the night in addition to live jazz, fervent percussion and dance performances, and live painting. Among the many standout performances, Former Poet Laureate of Philadelphia and recipient of the 2013 Visionary Leader Award Sonia Sanchez presenting Spike Lee with a rousing poem penned in his honor and for the ArtWell Awards.
Recognized for his incomparable contributions to American cinema and the arts and his life-long and unwavering commitment to social justice, Spike Lee followed up a stellar showcase of arts-inspired presentations and performances with a passionate and challenging reminder about the importance of arts in education. And as a special thank you for his selection as the 2015 ArtWell Visionary Leader Award Spike Lee passed along a previously unannounced gift to guests, an exclusive viewing of the trailer for his next cinematic feature, Chiraq.
ArtWell also honored Lynne Horoschak, Former Chair of Art Education at Moore College of Art & Design and Former co-Chair of the ArtWell Board of Directors, with its Miki Young ArtWell Leader Award. The newly renamed award was inaugurated by Maiken Scott of WHYY in honor of treasured leader and former ArtWell Board Chairwoman Miki Young. Student-alum Jerron Corley was presented with the ArtWell Student Award and gave voice to a stirring rendition of his own original poem called “Educate & Elevate”.
